The ongoing AFCON shocked the world due to the horrible incident which took place on January 25, 2022. The tragedy took place during the round of 16 games between host nation Cameroon and Comoros. Confederation of African football confirmed (CAF) at least six people died in the incident caused due to a stampede. In addition, 38, were injured in the Olembe stadium.
Subsequently, the videos of the incident went viral on the internet. The video depicts people screaming after being crushed at the entrance gate of the stadium. The crash occurred at the south entrance of the stadium as fans attempted to watch the game which ended 2-1 in favor of Cameroon. Also, as per authority, the incident occurred due to the carelessness of one of the staff of the stadium.

According to CAF president Patrice Mostepe ”If the gate was open, fans would have walked through and nothing such would occur”. Furthermore, he vowed that such an incident would never happen again in AFCON. Moreover, FIFA sent ”deepest condolences to the families and friends who lost their lives”.
Also, the deceased were taken to the Yaounde Emergency center soon after the incident. Moreover, a similar incident had taken place on the same day with 16 people dead and several injured. The tragedy occurred after a fire tore through a nightclub. The explosion from the firework resulted in two blasts which caused panic in the vicinity.
